The Vault World Returns To Reno!

A truly unique production that brings together several of the nation's top athletes for a weekend
celebration to showcase a single track and field event, the annual Pole Vault Summit in Reno is
THE annual highlight for these aerialists who come together to eat, drink, and sleep the vault!
As pictured above, a swath of runways and pits are aligned in such a manner to allow these
powerful athletes to compete alongside each other and in front of countless vault enthusiasts!

RENO, CA -- Neither an extra-early weekend on the winter competition calendar nor gusting winds and an ominous weather forecast have deterred many of the nation's - and the globe's -- top high-flying wonders from assembling here for the ever popular and highly anticipated Pole Vault Summit, with an estimated 2,400-plus aerialists set to compete at the Reno Livestock Events Center in officially kicking off the 2008 vault season.
The event kicks into high gear on Friday as an all-day vaulting clinic is unveiled, allowing coaches and athletes alike the golden chance to learn from several of the event's noted authorities on topics ranging from biomechanics and meet preparation to the mental approach to competing and excelling at high levels. From there, several of the biggest names in the sport put those principles in action during the Friday night elite vault, a multi-hour production that is as much about entertainment (often complete with music, artistic performers, props, and light shows) as it is about competition.
Saturday affords the chance for thousands of collegians and preps to clash on the runways, with 10 approach strips and an equal number of landing systems laid out in one over-sized room to create a circus-like atmosphere of vault euphoria. It's the biggest -- and clearly the most enjoyable -- day of the year for these aerialists, a vaultorgy of sorts as the action kicks off in the early morning and typically does not conclude until close to midnight, with competitors divided into age-group and ability categories to provide suitable challenges.
Entry sheets have been released and organizers report that record numbers of registrants litter the high school age entries as several groups of vaulters competing unattached or as part of club teams have taken advantage of the earlier-than-usual date to take part before the close of the holiday break, thus avoiding missing any class time. Snow in the nearby Sierra Nevada region and multiple weather advisories issued for flights arriving here have thus far seemingly not deterred those from the big weekend.
Even with national prep girls recordsetter Tori Anthony having graduated on to college and 17-09 star Spencer McCorkel also leaving the prep ranks, the high school vault scene looks very strong in 2008 thanks to the surprise return of a foreign-exchange student (such students are usually granted only one year of eligibility at a U.S. high school) on the boys' side and the presence of a record-setting sensation on the girls' side.  Here's our 2008 national high school outlook!
